Narrative: The Story Teller Contest
With winter fast approaching, I thought it might be a good time to release details for the 2010/11 Storyteller Contest. I ran this once before using ‘Once Upon A Time…’ as the theme (original contest thread is HERE)
A great movie (often) needs to have a great story driving it; and there are many different ways of conveying that story to an audience. This year the Story Teller Contest will focus on Narrative Techniques.
Narrative is generally accepted as possessing two components: the story presented and the process of its telling, or narration, often referred to as narrative discourse. Story is a series of represented events, characters (or agents for some), and actions out of which the audience constructs a fictional time, place, and cause–effect world, or digenesis.
Key points
- Create a movie or audio play utilising narration to enhance the story
- Solo or group project
- Any length, any genre, any format (TM, MS, I clone etc)
- Narration workshop hosted by Jase & AND on the 101 Show (date tba)
- Prizes tba (anyone that would like to suggest or donate a prize please pm me)
So, your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to create an original piece of machinima or audio theatre that employs narrative techniques to enhance the story. Your submitted piece will be judged on the effective use of narration in your story, originality, creativity and overall story quality
Very basically there are 2 types of narration, first person and third person. First person narration involves one of the characters within the story providing narration in either a past or present context. Third person narration involves a character not directly involved with the story providing narration. There are many different ways you could use narrative techniques to provide another dimension to your story
Rules
- Submission period will be from 1st March 2011 to midnight 31st March 2011
- Must be an original works created for this contest
- Any machinima platform is acceptable
- Movies must be uploaded to the Story Teller Contest page on TMU (details tba)
- Narration must be audible (i.e not by subtitle)
As with any contest the primary aim should be to have fun, so get thinking, have fun and we hope to see you taking part in this years Story Teller Contest
First Annual Ollies - TMUnderground Awards
The First Annual Ollies As part of the celebrations in regard to the first birthday of TMU, we are looking to see which movies the "viewing public" loved over the last twelve months, in our 1st Annual Ollies!
The process is simple; we are looking for everyone (for indeed YOU, as the viewing public, will be the "members of the Academy" in these awards) to place their votes for the award categories below; everyone gets a vote and the winners will be chosen based on the total number of votes tallied for each category. This way, the community speaks, and the winners will be those voted for BY the community as a whole.
Procedure
1) Copy and paste the list below into a PM.
2) List your vote for each category against the category name.
3) Send the completed list to Killian via PM on the boards here, with a subject line of " CA Nominations". The votes will be tallied after the deadline, and the nominees and winners will be listed at a later date.
Any questions please feel free to ask Mr Tom Foster, who will be happy to field any queries you have (provided they’re not the ones about where babies come from, how many beans make five, or two trains start from New York and Chicago…).
Please note that both Tom and I have exempted ourselves from nomination for any of these awards to ensure fair play, so DON'T vote for either of us.
Rules
1) One vote per registered TMU member (you must include your screen-name at the top of your voting form).
2) You must complete every category on the list (i.e. no voting for “Best Picture” and leaving the rest blank, for example; partially completed forms will be disqualified from the final tally).
3) To qualify for nomination, the listed movie(s) must have been released on TMU between 22 July 2008 and 22 July 2009 (either via direct upload or embedding from another hosting site). Movies hosted/uploaded to other sites, which have NOT been embedded on the movie site, do not qualify (i.e. forum posts pointing to movies hosted off-site, for example).
As the Movie site lists movies by days since it was uploaded, the cut off point is: any movie uploaded 18 days ago OR MORE (correct as of Sunday 8 August 2009).
The last acceptable movie that could be voted on this year would therefore be Sanction27’s Mod Showcase movie for July 09; anything later than this would be acceptable for the 2010 Awards, but not this year’s.
3) All completed lists must be back by 31 August 2009.
4) You CANNOT vote for yourself or your own movies; you can only vote for ANOTHER community member.
5) No canvassing for votes will be allowed; anyone caught doing so will be DISQUALIFIED from nomination.
The votes cast will be tallied, and the top three in each category will go forward to the final stage. A list of the top three will be posted.
At that point, a second round of voting will be taken for the nominees; the movie or individual in each category with the highest number of votes cast will be judged the winner.

1. Best Picture (Best overall movie released on TMU in the last twelve months)
2. Best Director (Best overall director of movies in the last twelve months)
3. Best Actor (Best Male Voice over artist in a movie released in the last twelve months)
4. Best Actress (Best Female Voice over artist in a movie released in the last twelve months)
5. Best Newcomer (overall best new filmmaker, writer, voice artist, etc, to come into the community in the last twelve months)
6. Best Writer (for the writer who has shown consistently good scriptwriting ability over the last twelve months)
MOVIE AND SERIES INDIVIDUAL CATEGORY AWARDS (any length)
7. Best Drama
8. Best Comedy
9. Best Western
10. Best Romance
11. Best Sci-Fi
12. Best Action
13. Best Arthouse

20.Best Soundtrack (Best music for a machinima movie; whether or not this music was composed especially for the movie or not)
21. Best Composer (the creator of the music soundtrack, NOT the film in which it was featured)
22. Best Sound Editing (best ambient and/or atmospheric sound use)
23. Best Sound Design (best use of sound effects, ambient sound, music and voice tracks overall)
24. Best Set Use in a Machinima Movie (modded sets or best use of existing sets)
25. Best Costume or Makeup in a Machinima Movie (best use of existing costume or makeup, or new costume/makeup)
26. Best Special Effects (outside edited using a third party program or particle effects from within the parent software)
26a. Best Prop for a Machinima Movie (custom mod for any engine)
TMU FILM AWARDS
27. Best Short Form Film (under 10 minutes) (any genre; total running time including credits must be under 10 minutes in length)
28. Best Long Form Film (over 10 minutes) (any genre; total running time including credits must be over 10 minutes in length)
29. Best The Movies Film (using The Movies engine; no length limit)
30. Best Moviestorm Film (using the Moviestorm engine; no length limit)
31. Best iClone Film (using the iClone engine; no length limit)
32. Best Other Machinima Movie (using any engine that does not have its own category (i.e. Sims1, 2 or 3, Poser, Antics, game engines, etc))
33. Best "Mash-up" Movie (using one or more software engines to produce)
34. Best Screenplay (the best SINGLE script for a movie; collaborations are allowed)
35. Best Subtitled Film (must NOT contain a vocal track, but can contain music or sound effects)
36. Best Non-English Movie Award (for the best Non-English machinima film on TMU (any engine))
37. Best Live Action Movie (live action film created by, shot by and/or starring a TMU community member)
THE "FILMIC COLLECTIVE" AWARDS
38. Best PR Campaign (posters, threads, teasers and trailers combined)
39. Best Movie Poster (self explanatory; the award is for the ARTIST who created the poster, not for the film or series for which it was produced)
40. Most Helpful Community Member (overall, including movie site commentary, forum posting and radio show appearances)
41. Funniest Comment on a Movie (must be derived from the movie page itself, not from the forums)
42. Best Comment on a Movie (must be derived from the movie page itself, not from the forums)
43. Most Entertaining Guest (for ANY TMOA Radio Show; this can be for the funniest, most informative, etc; the person you enjoyed hearing interviewed the most)
44. The Thong De Roger Award for Outstanding Contribution to TMU (the director/voice artist/writer/modder, etc that YOU think has epitomised TMU in the last twelve months)
If you are not sure of names (i.e. for things like the Composer category, for example), contact the filmmaker in question for the name (this is one reason why you should always use proper crediting for mods, VOs and music, folks!)
Please note neither categories nor rules are subject to negotiation.
And remember: these are YOUR awards; vote for the films, directors, writers, etc, who YOU think best encapsulate the spirit of the community.
You have until 12:00 midnight GMT on 31 August 2009 (3 full weeks, people!) to get the first round nominations in. Once these are in and tallied, we will produce the final nominees for the second round votes; submission guidelines for this will be posted after Round One.

I've been thinking of a contest for some time now and this idea came to me. How about a comedy competition, but not just a ordinary comedy competition...a 30 seconds or less competition.
Yes! This is a competition where you have to deliver the punchline in 30 seconds or less.

1) Obviously comedy has to be the genre.
2) It has to be 30 Seconds or Less (Duh)
3) All forms of Machinima are allowed.
4) You can submit as much entries as you wish.
5) All Entries must be in by Friday June 12th 11:59 PM Central Time.
6)Have fun!
Here's something I made, just for ideas.

Blender Competition - DCMF
A message from the Directors Cut Modding Forum:
OK to celebrate the return of DCMF, we are going to revamp the site, and here's the twist: the team isn't going to do it - YOU ARE. Now listen carefully.
The site is going to have the ability to use animated gif and swf files, which we would like you to decorate for us. We will do this through a competition, no not a movie competition, or a modding competition: a Blender competition.
The categories are
1. particles
2. animated ocean
3. raised shields
4. creating a tyre
5. using curves
We will give you a month to learn the categories of your choice. Don't worry - we will provide a link to a tutorial that will get you started. The rest is up to you
The tutorials will be provided once you the contestants have applied. We will also give you your own thread in our competition forum that no one can see except the team and yourself. This is where you will post weekly updates of :
Week
1. design stage with an 3 images of your design
2. creation update- 2 renders using f12
3. creation update- 3 renders using f12
4. deadline day open to public vote final animation render
This is so that we can follow what you are doing and allow you 2 question each to us for advice during the competition period. During this time the public and other contestants will not be able to see the thread until the deadline day when the comp is open for public voting.
We have 1 set criteria though for the render, and that is 475Lx100H.
The judges (team members) will make 1 final judgement at the end on which of the winning renders goes on our front page.

Rik Vargard's Captain leBorgne Recognized
A huge congratulations to TMU's Rik Vargard on having his movie Captain leBorgne listed as one of the top 10 MMO Machinima Movies of 2008 as rated by IGN.
The machinima was made used Pirates of the Burning Sea, and is a delightful watch!

Nine days to go!
1) This is a group project, so the first thing to think about is whom you would like to group with. A ‘group’ is 2 or more people. Voice actors and musicians are not counted as group members.
2) Nominate a spokes person for this group – this just makes things easier for us
3) You can be in more than one group but can not perform the same role. (E.g. if I was writing in Dulci’s group then I could not also write in Ken’s group, but I could direct or do PP in Ken’s group)
4) Decide which Sins you are interested in basing your production on and then formulate a pitch explaining your basic premise, theme etc.
5) You must pitch for a minimum of 3 Sins (to ensure we get a movie made for each one) but can pitch for all 7 if you want. Pitches and grouping details should be made in private to Sparky (on TMUnderground forum) or MefuneAkira by pm and should be ranked in order of preference (1 being your top choice etc)
6) Once all of the pitches are in (there will be a deadline for this) We will start making offers to the groups based on your pitches. Ultimately we’ll have 7 groups making 7 movies each based on a Sin theme that they have pitched for
7) Then once we have agreed deadlines with the 7 groups, each movie will be showcased (not sure how and where yet) one per night over the course of a week. A dedicated panel of community members (to be decided) will provide comments on each aspect of the movies – a bit like a review panel.
8) Movies MUST be original works. This means no remakes, adaptations or submitting one of your ongoing projects because it seems to ‘fit’.
9) Movies can be made in Iclone The Movies or Moviestorm or game capture. No RL movies, this is a machinima project.
Now, it doesn’t matter weather you believe in God, religion, or indeed if the 7 sins are even ‘sins’ – it is a theme base for a 7 movie series, so the movies don’t have to be pro-religion etc.
The whole idea is to use the Sin as a theme for the movie and explore whatever aspects of it you want from there. There is no real guide to content but we’d look for premises that are original, interesting and well thought out based on the theme of the project.
We're offering an extension to the pitching deadline until the end of this month - New deadline for all pitches is 1st May. Those groups that have already submitted, your pitches are being looked at over the coming week and you will be hearing from us shortly.
So, if you have been trying to decide whether or not to get involved - now is the time. Step up to the plate and make yourselves known. I guarantee there are other community members out there wanting to form or be a part of a group for this project.
